History comes alive here at the most extensively restored mission in the state. La Purísima mission is restored to the 1820’s mission era. La Purísima hosts over 200,000 visitors each year for recreation and a chance to explore California's heritage.

Founded in 1787, the La Purísima Mission land holdings once covered nearly 300,000 acres. Bordered by the Santa Maria River in the North and the Gaviota coastline in the South, the land was home to the Chumash people and Spanish settlers. The mission was best known for its hides and blankets, and at its peak two-thousand inhabitants herded as many as 24,000 cattle and sheep.

La Purísima Mission State Historic Park is open nearly every day for self-guided tours. The park interpreters lead a free one o’clock tour most days. The park frequently provides a re-creation of mission life during the 1820's, when the residents engaged in weaving, pottery making, candle making, blacksmithing, animal husbandry, and leatherwork. For dates, you can visit the La Purísima Mission State Historic Park website

La Purisima Mission State Historic Park

Overview

Founded in 1787, and largely destroyed by an 1812 earthquake, the Mission was restored in the 1930's by the Civilian Conservation Corps. It is considered the most completely restored mission in California. The park is open from 9am-5pm daily, and guided tours are available daily starting at 1pm. The park is located at 2295 Purisima Road, Lompoc. Phone (805) 733-3713 for more information.

Further information to help you plan your visit, including virtual tours of the grounds, are available by visiting the webpage for the Prelado de los Tesoros de la Purisima (Keepers of the treasure of La Purisima).

Trails

The El Camino Real, La Rancheria, & Las Zanjas Roads are historic service roads that are used by park visitors for hiking. These roads combined provide a 2.73-mile loop, generally accessible, hiking experience through coastal hills, with occasional views of historical water conveyance systems. Some sections of the roads contain features that could be challenging for some users, including steep running slopes up to 12%, and minor ruts in the road surface. Trailhead, accessible parking, and accessible restrooms are located at the visitor center.

Exhibits/Programs

Historic Adobe Structures: The routes within the adobe structures often include narrow doors, steps up or down, and high thresholds at the entries that may require assistance. An earthen ramp to the north deck helps provide access to the monastery, but assistance may still be required at room entries.

Visitor Center and Exhibit Hall: The visitor center and exhibit hall are generally accessible. Parking, route, and restrooms are generally accessible.

Other Information

A balloon tired wheelchair may be available to assist visitors with navigating the terrain and steps found at this park. Call the park for more information.

La Purísima Mission State Historic Park offers a bucolic and relaxed setting for weddings and events, surrounded by historic buildings and tucked within a small canyon, La Cañada de los Berros. Our location offers four venue options: The Main Church, The Padre’s Chapel, The Historic Mission Garden, and La Sala.

Main Church: a spacious and warm atmosphere with River-of-Life doors that open out to a view of the animal corrals, with burros, horses, longhorn cattle, sheep and goat-filled meadows. It also boasts original tile floors, and mission-era art covering the walls and altar. This church can accommodate up to 300 guests.

Padre’s Chapel: a generous room with an open beam ceiling, redwood floors, mission-era art and furnishings and a beautiful altar area. This church can accommodate up to 100 guests.

Garden Area: set around a historic fountain within a five-acre garden filled with native and domestic plants typical of a mission garden. This area can accommodate up to 100 guests.
