1,100-acre La Tuna Canyon Park provides trail access into the steep upper reaches of  the Verdugo Mountains. Parking and picnic tables are provided at the trailhead. A trail from the parking lot leads to another picnic area at "The Grotto," one half mile further up La Tuna Canyon Road. The Grotto is a deeply incised canyon with steep walls and large overhanging trees that culminate in a waterfall with a small pool.

The moderate 2.2-mile La Tuna Canyon Trail begins off La Tuna Canyon Road and climbs through oak and sycamore-lined canyons up to the ridgetop. Majestic views of the San Gabriel Mountains, the San Fernando Valley, and downtown Los Angeles abound. The La Tuna Canyon trail connects with the Verdugo Fire Road, also called the Backbone Road, which offers thirteen miles of trails across almost the whole length of the Verdugo Mountains.
