Waiākea 1942 Lava Flow Natural Area Reserve (NAR) was set aside and established as a NAR by Governors proclamation May 26th, 1972 by acting governor George R. Ariyoshi. This NAR was created by a recent lava flow, which was then recolonized by young ‘ohi‘a forests, providing good opportunities for the study of revegetation on lava flows. Waiakea 1942 Lava Flow is within the Three Mountain Alliance (TMA).
