Information provided by
Indian River County

Tread Softly, Finger Rot, Seven Minute Itch… It may come asa surprise that such a small plant could inspire names such as these.Scientifically, these plants are called Cnidoscolus stimulosus, and theyget their abrasive common names from the delicate stinging hairs that cover theleaves, stems, seed pods, and even flowers. If you accidentally brush againstthis native year-round bloomer, most can expect to feel some mild stinging inthe localized area that usually goes away within the hour. It should be notedthat some individuals have a more severe reaction, so use caution if you planto include this plant in a native wildflower garden. When seeing it in itsnatural habitat, it is best admired from a distance or through a camera lens.
