Seen a red headed lizard darting by recently? Peter’s Rock Agama, also known as simply an Agama, is a common sight in southern Florida. The species was introduced in the late 1970’s through the pet trade and has spread throughout the southern part of the state. The species poses a problem to native animals as it consumes insects and some small vertebrates such as native anoles, snakes, and birds. If found, homeowners are allowed to humanely euthanize the animals. There is currently no management project in action, and the animals can be owned as a personal pet without a permit.
