Endemic
Other Names: ‘alae kea
The ʻalae keʻokeʻo, or Hawaiian coot (Fulica alai), is a native water bird endemic to Hawaiʻi. Their black body and white beak and forehead stand out as they coast along the water. They can be found in open marshes and ponds where you’ll see them dip their heads in the water in search of small fish, insects, and other water creatures.
DLNR - DOFAW Wildlife Program, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), and private organizations and landowners work to manage, restore, and protect core and supporting wetland habitats as well as eliminate or reduce populations of introduced predators.
