This is a 1.73 mile, out-and-back route. The walk starts and ends at the City’s Ecke Sports Park, located at 278 Saxony Road, Encinitas. From there, cross Saxony Road and head north along the unimproved path along Saxony Road. Nearly the entire length of Saxony along this route is under a canopy of large eucalyptus trees providing ample shade on sunny days. As you start along the route, on your right will be the Liechtag Foundation’s 67-acre property, which is home to many non-profit organizations, many doing innovative work and research in the areas of food systems and sustainable farming practices. Stop and have a look at the Coastal Roots Farm, with hours open to the public. If you spot one of the farmers, say hello and find out what’s in season. Continue north to where Saxony Road meets Leucadia Boulevard. At that point, you can head back, or consider continuing north on Saxony Road, where you’ll find many interesting old homes, greenhouses and small farms. Saxony Road also connects you to Indian Head Canyon, a terrific, rugged hiking area with many trails.
The entire route along Saxony is dirt path, so be sure to wear suitable walking shoes and remember to bring water.
