Markers on either side of this rock commemorate the families who used to reside at this homestead.
One marker is part of the Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire and recognizes the family of James Due, one of the first black settlers in the town of Hancock. Read more about the Due family on the Forest Society's website here. The other side of this rock holds a marker in honor of the Welch family, who emigrated from Ireland in the 1860s, and ultimately helped conserve the property.
