Mr. Bourn Jr.'s study might look like a peaceful spot to read in the afternoon, but the noise of the stamp mills running day and night would have been deafening. The Empire Mine 'Cottage' was designed in 1897 by architect Willis Polk in the style of an English manor home. Some works published in 1897 that we might take off the shelf today, 125 years later, including Dracula by Bram Stoker, War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells, and Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand. You can get a look inside this building, and a bit more of its history on one of the weekend guided tours.
