You might notice that many Redwood trees (Sequoia sempervirens) have blacked trunks that appear to be from fire. Redwood trees are very well adapted to fire due to their thick, fibruous bark which contains relatively high levels of tannin, a fire retardant. Even when the fire burns through the bark, a tree can survive as long as most of the bark is intact. How many fire-scarred redwoods do you see?
