This stone with plaque is a lasting tribute to the Aulls, two of the Miami Valleys early conservationists.
From the beginning, they encouraged visitors to experience nature in their woodland gardens. Marie remembered that "John would say, 'These things don't belong to us. We must pass them on to the next generation.' It amuses me now to see this kind of thinking being propounded as innovative, when John felt that way, considering us custodians, back in the 1920s."
Marie would later create the Aullwood Audubon Nature Center, the Aullwood Audubon Educational Farm, the first in the United States, as well as assist with the founding of Five Rivers MetroParks in 1963. in 1987, she was included in the Ohio Natural Resources Hall of Fame by the State of Ohio's Department of Natural Resources.
Long-time MetroPark Commissioner and attorney for Marie, Irv Bieser, once said of her, "She showed me the importance of actually going out and doing something.... She didn’t want to shilly-shally around; she wanted to get things done."
