The Phenix City Riverwalk is a 1.21 mile structure on the western bank of the Chattahoochee River. The Riverwalk begins at a beautiful open amphitheater that seats 3000 and overlooks the Chattahoochee River. As you travel the course of the Riverwalk you will encounter a number of different surroundings. From the Phenix City Amphitheater north, a good portion of the Riverwalk is shaded with great tree cover and offers a great location for viewing wildlife. However, as you continue north there are also sections of the Riverwalk that are open and provide plenty of southern sunshine to the daily bike riders, fitness enthusiasts, and peaceful strollers. The Riverwalk is designed using a mix of material ranging from cement and brick to boardwalk style decking along with multiple iron bridges. Parts of the Riverwalk were designed to include early 20th Century existing dam structures that place the traveler at a much higher elevation above the river.
Maintenance and up-keep for the Riverwalk is a regular duty that is undertaken by the Phenix City Parks and Recreation Department. Trash disposal, benches, lighting, and water fountains are strategically placed along the path to offer the traveler all that they need at any time of day or night.
Phenix City is positioned directly across the Chattahoochee River from Georgia's third largest city, Columbus. Connecting the two cities are multiple bridges. However, two of the bridges are very historic in which one has been refashioned as a pedestrian walk bridge. The historic Dillingham Bridge and the newly renovated historic 14th Street pedestrian walk bridge serves as excellent connections to the 15 mile Columbus Riverwalk that stretches into Fort Benning, GA. The Riverwalk also offers and excellent overlook location for the whitewater recreational course on the Chattahoochee River. When entirely complete, the whitewater course is expected to draw 1.5 million spectators to the riverfront annually. These onlookers will certainly increase the pedestrian use of the River walk. Plans are currently in place to continue the Phenix City Riverwalk north 2 miles to AL HWY 80, south 2.98 miles to State Docks Road, and west 0.47th of a mile into the Phenix City Nature Trail which connects to Moon Lake. In the near future, river walkers will certainly be able to take advantage of Riverwalk style cafes and retail boutiques. For now, the Riverwalk offers a wonderful location for strolling, running, biking, viewing, and enjoying life under the lights or under the sunshine.
