When we think about endangered species we rarely think about farm livestock. The Livestock Conservancy lists some of the rabbits in this house on its critically endangered list. MetroParks has chosen to raise American and American Chinchilla rabbits. These breeds are unique to North America and have existed for over 100 years. They are docile, large breeds that produce large litters and tasty meat.
Raising rabbits requires minimal space. They can be raised inside or outside and provide a good source of protein. Pound for pound they are one of the cheapest sources of meat to raise. They also produce manure that is ready for garden use without composting.
Farmers and home food raisers can help save rabbits and other livestock. They can choose to raise heritage breeds over popular commercial varieties. Raising heritage breeds helps to protect our food systems by keeping genetic resources secure.
