The woods that you are walking through now are typical of a maritime oak forest. The canopy is dominated by white and scarlet oaks. You can find hickory, sassafras, viburnum and hazelnut growing in the understory. Small mammals like chipmunks and squirrels collect nuts from the oaks, hickories and hazelnuts to store for colder months. Squirrels build nests of leaves high in the upper branches of the oaks while chipmunks dig underground burrows.
