The trail starts in a beech tree grove along the Flagg Kirkland Trail and slowly climbs through a hardwood forest that includes old rock walls . The trail passes the beginning of  Jenny's Pond Trail and finally ends where it becomes the Dixon-Fleming Trail. The Axelrod Trail is named for the family that choose to preserve their land. The trail is marked with Red diamond blazes.
