Open to foot traffic only, the Chain of Lakes route is an adventurous and challenging hike or run with stunning views of the extended Knik River flats. The trail begins just past the bridge on the Rippy Trail up a short steep hill. The trail initially ascends steeply up a slope and traverses along for several hundred yards before dropping again to an offshoot of the Rippy Trail which can also be accessed off the Rippy Trail lower loop. Look for the many brown fiberglass easement posts marking the route. This first 1/4 mile section can be easily bypassed in favor of the lower route. From there on, this indistinct (but well-marked) route travels through beautiful stands of birches at the edge of the flats.
