The Kūlanihāko‘i Mountain Bike Park trails were created over 30 years ago partially as forestry roads for the planting of timber (from the 1980s) in the area, as well as by public mountain biking enthusiasts. This trail network provides an area specifically designed for mountain bike users. Volunteers with the Big Island Mountain Biking Association (BIMBA) have been instrumental in keeping these trails maintained. This is an area the state has setup for mountain biking fun and is a very popular location. Some features have been built in the area. Close to Hilo, Kūlanihāko‘i trails are fast, technical singletrack. Roots, rocks, logs and the occasional wooden feature will keep you entertained until your legs tell you they’ve had enough!

The Kūlanihāko‘i trail system is pretty unique. There is not much elevation gain. You don't have any serious, extended climbing going on. Kūlanihāko‘i trails is tight, twisty and technical. The ground is rough, black lava rock. Add in roots and lot's of short pedals up followed by quick descents and you'll be worn out in no time. The forest is also incredible green and beautiful. The contrast of the black lava rock and green moss has a definite volcanic vibe!

Highest point: 752 feet.

Lowest point: 536 feet.
