One of the more popular ATV trails in the upper Matanuska, the Nelchina Trail travels down from the Glenn Highway to the braided riverbed below the Nelchina Glacier, surrounded by the steel-gray Chugach Mountains. Spectacular views abound, but be careful not to get stuck in the first few muddy miles and use extreme caution whenever crossing glacial creeks and rivers. This trail is used by snow-machines in the winter.
To access this trail, turn south into an extensive gravel pullout near mile 126 of the Glenn. The start of the trail is clearly evident at the end of the pullout.
***Please note that the GPS track shown, at least for the first miles, does not correspond to the trail. The GPS track follows a route also shown in old topo maps, which is no longer the used trail.
