The Brooklyn Mountain Greenway is one of three Borough-wide network of ecological zones. Wrapping around the more settled parts of the Borough are stretches of unbroken forest and rugged terrain that form a “green belt” girdling the residential core of the municipality. The “buckle” of the green belt is the Borough’s Natural Area Preserve, created by donations and foreclosures from tiny parcels originally used as movie theater and newspaper subscription incentives.

This section of the greenway is a large Hudson Farm property that encompass the sections of the Borough known as Wolf’s Head and Brooklyn Mountain, containing some of the earliest settlement sites within the Borough, including the “Devil’s Footprint”, one of two recognized Lenni Lenape camps found in Hopatcong. The Highlands Trail/Lake Hopatcong Trail cuts through the Hudson Farm property and crosses Brooklyn Mountain Road heading south toward Cowboy Creek passing through the Natural Area Preserve, allowing you to experience some of the least disturbed Highlands terrain along its 150-mile traverse of the region’s ridges.
